We’ll be talking about the legislative accomplishmentsduring these last two years under President Obama – and there are a LOT of ‘em!

Obama’s two very productive legislative years

WASHINGTON — President Obama wrapped up a lame duck congressional session with strong victories on Wednesday, and flew off to Hawaii for a winter break to close out two very productive legislative years.

The Senate on Wednesday handed Obama his top international priority and ratified the New START nuclear treaty with Russia–making the win sweeter because 13 Republicans climbed on board. The House and Senate sprinted through a stalled bill to compensate 9/11 workers injured at the World Trade Center site. In the morning, Obama signed the repeal of the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell law banning gays from serving openly in the military.

The last weeks have seen a legislative blitz. A food safety bill, years in the making, is headed to Obama’s desk to sign. He recently signed a child nutrition bill and that tax compromise that forced Obama to extend Bush-era tax breaks for the very rich until 2012 in exchange for payroll tax deductions and unemployment benefits extensions.

As the Obama presidency nears midterm, there are other historic achievements that affect a lot of people: the health reform bill, new Wall Street regulations, creation of a consumer financial protection bureau, extension of unemployment benefits, the economic stimulus package, regulation of tobacco products and the popular cash for clunkers program. The local GOPers defending GOPer Young include GOP State Rep Jenifer Loon’s Campaign Manager (Gary Stevens) and a GOP SD42 Vice Chair (Kevin Schultz). Schultz claimed he was speaking only for himself; yeah – “right.”

Yet yesterday, FEC Tony (GOP Chair Tony Sutton) and his side-kick MudSlingerMike (GOP Deputy Chair Michael Brodkorb) took a cheap shot (hey, they’re GOPers; whaddya expect?) at State Auditor Rebecca Otto.

Which, of course, is “Today’s Example Of GOPers Care About Protecting Public Funds (Except When They Don’t)”

So I’ll be talking with Rebecca Otto today on Quick On The Uptake – I’m sitting in for Host Mike McIntee!

Now, State Auditor Otto probably can’t say much; as required by state law her office was notified early on about GOPer Young dippin’ into the ol’ Taxpayer Till. But I’m sure she’ll have plenty to say about the cheap shot the GOPers took at her!

I’ll also be talking with John Van Hecke from MN2020.org about a report from economic policy fellow Lee Egerstrom that looks at how Northern European countries have heavily influenced the Minnesota economy and its social safety net systems; fellow blogger Dave Mindeman, and State Rep Frank Hornstein, who just got back from the Gulf – we’ll talk about how the BP Oil Spill and how it might affect Minnesota’s migratory birds.

In addition to talking about important news, we’ll take a break from politics to have an in-studio conversation with one of Minnesota’s Citizen-Soldiers – Major Rickert – which we feel is fitting as a tribute to those who have worn the uniform on this day after Memorial Day. Major Rickert will be talking, among other things, about the recent alert that as many as 2,700 fellow Minnesotans may be deployed to Iraq and Kuwait as that war winds down.
